If you saw Fernando Eimbcke’s dryly amusing “Duck Season”, then you know what to expect: leisurely pacing, naturalism on steroids and performances so understated they border on the comatose. Set in a seedy beach town on the Yucatan peninsula, this outing again features young Diego Cantano as Juan, who has just rammed his mom’s car into a telephone pole, and his...

Mexican writer-director Fernando Eimbcke's 2004 feature film debut, Duck Season , won numerous film festival awards and made an impression on me personally. Eimbcke takes an unfortunate if not unusual route other filmmakers have traveled following a successful debut and gets self-indulgent with his follow-up, Lake Tahoe . It was just released this week on DVD by Film Movement....

Reviewer: James van Maanen Rating (out of 5): **** On the basis of his first two full-length features -- Duck Season and now Lake Tahoe -- I'm ready to declare Mexican filmmaker Fernando Eimbcke (pronounced I'm-Kay, with the accent on the first syllable) a real original. Eimbcke's got his own tone and âtakeâ on things, and his movies remind...

In Fernando Eimbcke's film, a young man goes on a quest to fix his car, finding a human connection when he desperately needs it. At first glance "Lake Tahoe," the second feature by the 39-year-old Mexican director Fernando Eimbcke, looks very much like your standard minimalist import. Laconic characters, a fixed camera and unhurried rhythms amount these days to...

Highly Recommended In Lake Tahoe , director and co-writer Fernando Eimbcke displays a gentle but controlled sensibility in telling a quiet story that has an almost universal resonance. To clear up confusion straight away, I should point out to those interested that the film's title has no relation to its locale. Lake Tahoe is set firmly in contemporary Mexico, although I can't be more...
