They can permit opponents to dictate their fate, as Calgary did in a 5-2 victory at Staples Center, or they can learn to ignore distractions and disadvantages and consistently play hard and tough. It was an early start. They've played more games than most teams and traveled twice to the East Coast. Ryan Smyth and Rob Scuderi are injured. Their dog ate their homework.

They halt a skid but it is far from pretty and includes many of the foibles that have gotten them into this mess. Scouts for more than a dozen NHL teams sat elbow to elbow in the press box of the Honda Center on Thursday, a rare scene before winter settles on the Canadian prairie and scouts feel a sudden need to visit the league's warmer outposts.

Luc Robitaille, whose 668 goals and 1,394 points are NHL records for left wings, today takes his rightful place in the Hockey Hall of Fame. His journey began with modest expectations but great heart. Luc Robitaille was never the fastest skater or most purely gifted player on the ice at any level he played. For a while, he wasn't even the most prolific scorer.
