... and there's way, way too much down time. When you're a rookie like Blazers backup power forward Jeff Pendergraph , who went down with a hip injury that required surgery before playing his first minute as a pro, it's doubly frustrating. Not only are you sidelined from playing but you're sidelined from making a first impression on your team, coaching staff and fans. By all accounts,...

... has emerged as a veteran leader and others have also stepped up big time without Harden and Jeff Pendergraph in Tempe, guys like Jimmer Fredette and Jonathan Tavernari have been terrorizing opponents in Provo. ... that his role as a leader has been stepped up big time with the departure of emotional leader Jeff Pendergraph. You want tangible proof? How about his stirring alley-oop to Trent Lockett? Paired with Lockett’s tremendous athleticism, Glasser’s much-improved court vision makes these two a dangerous pair going forward. However, a team fatigued by playing four NIT games and traveling...

... front, center Eric Boateng (6-10, 245) has played very little since transferring from Duke. With Jeff Pendergraph (14.5ppg, 8.2rpg) gone, Boateng will need to step up big-time this year as a senior. Junior Rihards Kuksiks (6-6, 205) is the leading returning scorer at 10.3ppg, and was strictly a three-point shooter (44.3%). Freshman Victor Rudd(6-7, 200) is a big-time recruit, who...

And that's what makes it so intriguing. Through four games, all wins, no one is sure what to make of these Sun Devils. Fans expected struggles without NBA draft picks James Harden and Jeff Pendergraph. Instead, ASU has thrived under an "equal opportunity" offense that has produced five double-digit scorers and a school-record 18 3-pointers against San Francisco.

James Harden - @jhard13 - Usually posts on which city’s mall he is shopping at that day. Entertaining nonetheless. Jeff Pendergraph - @TheRealJP31 - Will be a bit more fun to follow once he recovers from hip surgery. Herb Sendek - @HerbSendek - Does a great job of keeping fans informed on the day to day. ... out the next season and was on the bench for most of the next two. ASU found it too hard to take Jeff Pendergraph off the floor. This is what Boateng has had to live with, experiencing his last true on-court success four years ago when he was tagged a high school superstar."I've said all along, Eric Boateng is ready for his last year here," teammate Jamelle McMillan said. The Arizona State men's basketball team lost two pillars in James Harden and Jeff Pendergraph, both gone to the NBA. But without the star power, the unranked Sun Devils had no trouble in their opener, defeating outmanned Western Illinois 87-35 Friday night at Wells Fargo Arena.

... 2009-10 is that the Sun Devils don’t have anybody that will immediately replace James Harden and Jeff Pendergraph. However, if there’s any coach that can make things happen after the loss of two cornerstones, it’s Sendek. On that token, I’d like to go out on a limb and say that freshman Trent Lockett is legit. Lockett wasn’t the most heralded or celebrated player in this recruiting...

Oh roundball, how we’ve missed you. Though you might not have known it here on PFN (and I do apologize, once again, real life and a quarterback change got in the way), basketball season does indeed begin tomorrow. Herb Sendek and the guys take to Ned Wulk Court tomorrow night to open up the 2009-10 campaign and, despite the fact that James Harden and Jeff Pendergraph have moved on, there...

POSITIVES• The veterans. James Harden and Jeff Pendergraph are gone, but the Sun Devils still have an experienced nucleus in Glasser, Ty Abbott and Rihards Kuksiks. Glasser led the Pac-10 in assist-to-turnover ratio last season. Abbott is a strong defender, and Kuksiks ranks as one of the country's top shooters. At 10.3 points per game, he is ASU's returning leading scorer.

When the Sun Devils need points, where will they go?In other words, who is this team's go-to player?Fourth-year coach Herb Sendek doesn't see it in such defined terms. He points out that ASU...
