A Kansas City business was evacuated this afternoon after carbon monoxide from a faulty furnace sickened six workers. Firefighters and paramedics were called about 2 p.m. to Hair U Wear, 5900 Equitable Road, after the workers complained of headaches and nausea, fire Battalion Chief Joe Vitale said.

A child playing with a lighter caused a fire this afternoon at a house at 5125 N. Fremont, said Joe Vitale, spokesman for the Kansas City Fire Department. Fire crews responded at about 2:55 p.m. One adult was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation, Vitale said.

Residents temporarily evacuated a three-story apartment building in the 8000 block of Campbell Street this morning when fire broke out in one of the units. The fire was contained to a third-floor apartment, Batallion Chief Joe Vitale said. Firefighters had it under control in about 10 minutes and no one was hurt.
