Mercer Island athletic director Craig Olson said Hedlund, who would have turned 67 next week, was having lunch with friends on Monday and she began slurring her words. She was rushed to Overlake Medical Center where doctors discovered a blocked carotid artery.

One of Joyce Hedlund's long-term goals was to find the funds to put lights on the Mercer Island High School tennis courts. As a way to honor her memory -- Hedlund died on Nov. 4 after suffering a stroke earlier in the week -- Mercer Island tennis players are trying to raise money to make her dream a reality.
