... Anton van Zyl, Jean Deysel, Duane Vermeulen, Francois Louw, Willem Alberts, Sarel Pretorius and Lionel Mapoe were left out of the initial squad. Not only did some of the outstanding Currie Cup performers miss out, but for the most part provincial combinations were not kept intact, and as a result a hodge-podge team has suffered shock defeats at the hands of Leicester and Saracens.Both...

... in Port Elizabeth."We have lost a number of regulars from our successful team of last season like Lionel Mapoe, Robert Ebersohn and Philip Snyman and we, therefore, need to find replacements before the start of the IRB Sevens World Series next month."I am confident we will find suitable replacements, but we must take into account that the newcomers must be given time to understand...

Os du Randt says Peter de Villiers has not kept his word of selecting in form players for the Springboks’ end-of-year tour. There have been surprise inclusions in the Bok squad, such as Bandise Maku who has hardly featured this season, and some shock omissions, namely Adriaan Strauss and Lionel Mapoe who have been consistent in [...]

Keo.co.za rates the Cheetahs players in Saturday’s Currie Cup final at Loftus Versfeld. Ratings out of 10 15 Hennie Daniller – 6 Safe under pressure and came into the backline with telling results. Obviously under instruction by Cheetahs management to run it, but the visitors may have done better to exploit his massive boot. 14 Lionel Mapoe – 7 A [...]

There is no argument that can be made to justify Rose's inclusion. Currently he does not deserve to be a Springbok. Given the need to find greater black representation, the biggest shock is the omission of Cheetahs wing Lionel Mapoe. Outside of Bryan Habana, Mapoe has been the form wing of the Currie Cup and there is no explanation that will convince me he was not good enough to...

Outside of Bryan Habana, Mapoe has been the form wing of the Currie Cup and there is no explanation that will convince me he was not good enough to go. When you get a player like Mapoe, you pick him and give him an overseas tour to settle into the Springbok...

Drotske said he wasn’t worried about the move as Juries wasn’t considered a starter at Free State given Lionel Mapoe, Jongi Nokwe and Danwel Demas are all contracted. It’s debatable whether Juries will earn much game time with the Stormers, who already have Bryan Habana, Sireli Naqelevuki, Gio Aplon, Joe Pietersen, Nick Koster, Conrad Jantjes and JJ Engelbrecht as back-three options.

Rose is the classic example of a De Villiers favourite keeping a more deserving candidate out of the national set-up. There are other backline players that deserved to tour, WP’s Peter Grant as well as the Cheetahs’ Lionel Mapoe just two that come to mind. In the case of Grant, the tour would provide an alternative flyhalf the opportunity to gain game time so that if Morne Steyn broke...

... they were at other unions, they’d be first-choice.’De Villiers admitted impressive Cheetahs wing Lionel Mapoe was unlucky to miss out, but said Earl Rose deserves his spot. De Villiers claimed Rose was in good form during the Currie Cup, despite being dropped by the Lions after a number of sub-standard showings.‘If you look at the wings from all the top six unions, they all could...

Wing - Lionel MapoeBryan Habana and JP Pietersen form a settled wing combination but there's a sharp drop-off in reliable talent behind these players with Odwa Ndungane's cerebral tactical play far better suited to fullback and Jongi Nokwe's breath-taking speed negated by the fact he's not much of an all-rounder.Gritty Lions winger Dusty Noble, Emerging Boks flyer Bjorn Basson and Bulls...

A shock exclusion from the team is the Cheetahs’ top try-scorer Nokwe. The Springbok speedster has formed a good back three combination with Hennie Daniller and Lionel Mapoe, but Danwel Demas and Fabian Juries have been considered ahead of him.
