Firefighters Local 718 was the only other city employee union to back City Councilor Michael Flaherty’s failed mayoral bid. Some police members viewed the ouster as possible foreshadowing if fire union leadership is put to a vote. Fire Union president Edward Kelly was an early Flaherty supporter. Some of his members have told the Herald there now is a groundswell to oust him.
