Patrick Hamilton

There are three interesting biographies of Patrick Hamilton – few writers who work in the crime genre are so blessed, although maybe this is because Hamilton is not always described as a ‘crime writer’ (though he would be if he were working today, I think.) One of the books is Through a Glass Darkly , by Nigel Jones, a sound piece of work that is well worth reading....

Ripley and Gorse

The first book in the Patrick Hamilton’s Gorse trilogy, part of which sourced the excellent tv series The Charmer, was The West Pier . Graham Greene generously described it as ‘the best book written about Brighton’. It was published in 1951, and was followed by Mr Stimpson and Mr Gorse (1953) and Unknown Assailant (1955). The series was actually meant to be a quartet,...

Book review: Hangover Square

Time for another of the freebie classics The Times was giving away a couple of months ago. One week's theme was "London" which was inexplicably colour-coded pink. Patrick Hamilton wrote the play Rope , which I'm going to see in January and which Hitchcock filmed. He must have had an interest in crime because his novel Hangover Square opens with a definition of schizophrenia,...

Elf planning

... you remember paying £1 a pint *"back in the day". The book was Hangover Square, by Patrick Hamilton, who I always want to call Peter Hamilton (who is a spectacular sci-fi talent.) We had enjoyed the book, all of us, and with some trepidation I announced my choice of book. It was to be A Time To Die: The Kursk Disaster by Robert Moore. A strange choice, and one...

Reflections for Sunday morning

Much ink has been spilled on the question of why so many writers are alcoholics. Of America’s seven Nobel laureates, five were lushes—to whom we can add an equally drunk-and-disorderly line of Brits: Dylan Thomas, Malcolm Lowry, Brendan Behan, Patrick Hamilton, Philip Larkin, Kingsley Amis, all doing the conga to (in most cases) an early grave. Yet: Writing involves fantasy;...

Hangover Square

Just started reading Hangover Square by Patrick Hamilton this morning. It’s a much darker, more modern book than Craven House. So far, it’s wonderful. I stopped reading it on the train when I got to what I thought was an unimprovably good sentence: Then he remembered, without any difficulty, what it was he had to do: [...]

The Charmer

... singer from Steeleye Span.) The source material for the scripts was extracted from the books that Patrick Hamilton wrote about Gorse. The incidents in the books are somewhat different, but The Charmer is a real success, which can still be viewed with a great deal of pleasure a generation after it was made. Hamilton was a fascinating writer, by the way, and I’ll say more...

One Minute With: John O'Farrell

It changes all the time but at the moment, I'm working my way through everything by Patrick Hamilton, a greatly underrated novelist and dramatist. Like me, he also loved pubs. He wrote a series of novels; Slaves of Solitude is one of the best books I have read for a long time.
