Pitcairn Island Today (1935)

USA Short Documentary Producer: Eugene H. Roth Narrator: Carey Wilson Taking a brief look at Pitcairn Island, which became the home of the British mutineers from the Bounty and their Tahitian wives at the end of the 18th century, this short documentary - full of comments about primitive lives, brown people, half-castes, and cross breeding - is really rather depressingly condescending and casually...

Per capita, Pitcairn Island is GlobalGiving’s #1 recipient in the world

As the metrics guy, oddities sometimes appear in the GlobalGiving database. For example, today I learned Pitcairn Island received $158 per resident through GlobalGiving project #996: Boat-Shed Construction at Pitcairn Island. When there are 50 people on one island, $7,301 has a major impact. Pitcairn Island facts: These guys are the decendents of the Mutiny on the [...]

The Return of Penal Colonies

On Friday, attorneys for six of the Uighurs held in Guantanamo Bay announced that they have been transferred to live on the island of Palau. (Pitcairn Island must have been unavailable). Perhaps all of the detainees who are the parties in Kiyemba (just taken on certiorari by the Supreme Court) will be resettled to render the case moot. This ad-hoc way of dealing with the detainee issue strikes...

Easter Island residents fear ruin

... is happening here." The isolated island, 2,300 miles west of Chile and 1,200 miles east of Pitcairn, survives on tourist revenue but local authorities say there are now too many arrivals. The boom is straining a basic infrastructure short of water, electricity and sanitation services. Mounting waste is putting underground water sources at risk.
