News came from one of our New York readers of a Solemn Pontifical Mass for the Dead offered in New York City this past All Souls Day at Holy Innocents Church. The celebrant will be familiar to many of you, Bishop James Timlin, formerly ordinary of Scranton, Pennsylvania -- a bishop who supported the FSSP in North America a great deal in their earliest days. Pictures were provided by the Society...
Eamonn Manning has sent me these photos from the RequiemMass which was celebrated in the usus antiquior at St Paul's Church in the Falls Road last Saturday: The congregation of about 100 was a good mix of ages (mostly at the back, as is the Irish custom!) The choir sang the propers from the Graduale and Victoria's Requiem for six voices, as well as the motet Versa Est in Luctum...
I have been collecting a few mailings we have received from (or around) All Souls Day, and I am now delighted to show some of them. ... such depth in them. They will be familiar to music lovers as being part of Benjamin Britten's War Requiem. The War Requiem continues to divide people about its greatness, but I am convinced that it is a really great piece of music, and drama. Britten's understanding of the words of the Requiemmass is extraordinary ('Lacrimosa' as sung by Galina Vishnyevskaya is a highlight),...
... to say she had died: stage 4 metastatic breast cancer in the liver and possibly the spinal column. Requiemmass sung this morning in the chapel at Magdalen. Good grief, if I was doing a reading at my wife's memorial service I couldn't possibly be as dignified and calm as Tim was, reading a passage from Julian of Norwich in which she saw God hosting a banquet for all the honoured souls...
Today was pretty awesome. We started off with a RequiemMass with Absolutions at the Catafalque for Remembrance Sunday, and then had a service for the blessing of graves at Sidcup Cemetery. I took lots of photos, and when it came to choosing a few for the blog, I just found that I had too many I wanted to include, and so I made a slideshow and set it to Lacrimosa from Mozart's Requiem....
... we checked (and checked again,)that it was definitely Confirmations and Benediction and not a Mass and then tucked in. The young lady opposite me made quick work of her sausage roll, whilst I enjoyed a caramel shortcake. See what I mean about all this devotional stuff, it leads inevitably to food. Then it was back to the Church. Then it was off to a rehearsal at St Giles Cripplegate, where...
... me, anyway), in which I became furious when (for example) non-Catholics would listen to Mozart's RequiemMass in D Minor ... and when atheists or anti-Catholics listened? It would send me through the roof. And if they actually PLAYED the music, as in, played instruments in an orchestra? LIVID. It enraged me, exactly as phyrecracker is enraged. I felt the appropriation and I felt the...
On Saturday evening I had the pleasure of witnessing a stunning performance of Verdi's RequiemMass by the Sussex Symphony Orchestra and the Sussex Chorus conducted by Mark Andrew-James. I was lucky enough to present as part of a long term project documenting activities in around the church and inner city Brighton parish. St Bartholomew's church has to be one of the most spectacular churches...
