As mentioned previously, the founders of Liberty Maven attended the FFF-sponsored Robert Higgs talk at George Mason University earlier this week. I agree that this was one of the most intriguing and entertaining speeches I’ve been to. Watch it here: Robert Higgs from The Future of Freedom Foundation on Vimeo.

Robert Higgs was on campus yesterday to discuss his book Depression, War, and Cold War; it was particularly poignant in light of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Bryan Caplan's recent post on the Wall inspires me to consider (briefly) two myths about socialism: it works great in theory (it doesn't) and it was motivated by high-minded idealism that was, unfortunately,...

Higgs rips the Progressive ideology that opposes free-markets and voluntary transactions. This Progressive propensity by local liberal bloggers and commenters is shown to be pure idiocy. Are they so ideologically blind that they cannot see how governments at every level have intervened and intervened again until they have displaced or distorted every element of the [...]

I feel bad for the local bashers of libertarianism as they obviously know nothing about it. If any of them wish to get a feel for it, this is a good place to start. It’s long, but libertarianism is subtle and needs that kind of time to sink in in this era.

Allow me to apologize in advance for my continued adoration of the great Robert Higgs. In his latest piece he details the reasons why he is hesitant to champion “solutions” to the tyranny of State power. Higgs is a modern day H.L. Mencken. Sure, he’s a cynic and some may consider him a pessimist, but [...]

... scorching an already crispy economy. History offer some advice here: the economic historian Robert Higgs has argued that investors in the 1930s were hesitant to make investments because they simply did not know what the rules of the game were. Higgs notes that this " Regime Uncertainty " was one of the reasons that the Great Depression lasted so long. The inconsistent...

... far better than forcibly transferring wealth from the productive economy to political boondoggles. Robert Higgs makes this case. The more fundamental point that Rosen misses is that restoring a truly free market would be a lot better than "doing nothing." Advocates of free markets are not for the status quo: we are for replacing today's mixed economy with liberty. As my...

I was lucky enough to get a coveted invitation to a Liberty Fund Colloquium. It's this Thursday through Sunday at a seaside hotel in La Jolla, California. I'll spend my time hobnobbing with Vernon Smith, Ed Lopez, Ben Powell, Pete Boettke, Catherine Eckel, Robert Higgs, Barkley Rosser, and Bonnie Wilson. I'll drink a beer, smoke a cigar, and watch the sun set over the So-Cal Pacific Ocen...

In “clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right,” I quoted Robert Higgs as follows: Henry Adams observed that “politics, as a practice, whatever its professions, has always been the systematic organization of hatreds.” This marshalling of hatreds is not the whole of politics, to be sure, but it is an essential element. Thus, [...]
