"Of the billions poured out in bailouts and stimulus, a substantial share has gone to privileged insiders and liberal interest groups - Wall Street bankers, auto unions, public-sector employees." - New York Times columnist Ross Douthat, 11/29/09 Last week , I wrote about the various zombie lies surrounding budgetary matters - and how they are legitimated by both right-wing...

This is Ross Douthat's latest New York Times Op-Ed . Douthat is the youngest columnist in Times history. Shockingly he is also a conservative. The focus of Douthat's piece concerns the voting trends of young people based on economic factors. However Douthat also echoes some of the warnings that I give to the conservative establishment in my upcoming book.

I'd have more respect for Ross Douthat if he wouldn't disprove his own theories within his own column . To whit: Do downturns create Democrats? The Great Depression certainly did: The generation that came of age in the 1930s has cleaved to the Democratic Party like no population before or since. And it makes intuitive sense that experiencing a recession at a formative age could inspire...

Very little . Douthat attempts to hold on to hope that his generation of young people will be Republicans. He cites a study showing that recessions make people less confident in the federal government; thus, even though recessions also make people distrust capitalism, that if the Republicans grind the government to a halt, they can then claim young people. I don't think so, and for several reasons....

Carter ruined the economy in the 1970s, and Reagan rescued it. That's the phony narrative you see again and again from conservative pundits.

Ross Douthat has been occupying some of the world’s priciest editorial real estate for a while now, churning out variously incoherent or inane commentary for the New York Times every Monday. He got the job earlier this year when I was lost in a fog so I haven’t paid much attention to him. I think [...]

Ross Douthat, who is an observant Catholic, has been reading a history of the Catholic Church in America, and reflects on how the historical Irishness of its clerical culture may have made the sex abuse scandal so much worse here (and in Ireland) than in other national Catholic churches. Excerpt: But you can see how it could all go bad -- how a culture so intensely clerical, so politically...

Ross Douthat says it’s very possible — if Democrats improve how they handle the recession . That said, per his note about Gen X has a strong GOP contingent, and per real liberals’ note about how Obama and many Congressional Democrats are a bigger sellout to Wall Street than Clinton was, even if Dems do “manage” the recession halfway well, the question is...

Ross Douthat is skeptical about Lou Dobbs' presidential chances: "Remember when Bob Barr was going to play a spoiler’s role in 2008?" Yes, Bob Barr...let him be a warning to Lou just how fast your political career can go downhill when you mess with the wrong person .

Ross Douthat’s column about the impact of the economy upon generational voting trends is even more interesting for what it omits than it is for what it says. Recessions, it seems, only benefit liberals when an activist government is perceived to have answers to the crisis. When liberal interventions seem to be effective, a downturn can [...]

The Great Depression certainly did: The generation that came of age in the 1930s has cleaved to the Democratic Party like no population before or since. Ross Douthat dreams of a Republican who understands and can talk about policy. Just imagine. For a change Sunday newschat shows might cover actual issues instead of serving as group therapy sessions for stupid angry people like John McCain, Eric Cantor and Joe Lieberman. The dirty little secret of DC is that [...]

I AM, officially, fascinated by "Ross" "Douthat's" "new" "blog" in the "Newspaper" "of Record", at least until the new Kitchenaid™ Pro 5 Plus stand mixer (imperial gray), with ice cream and sausage-making accessories (guaranteed delivery between November 25-27!) arrives.
