Free agency starts at midnight tonight. Teams have negotiating exclusivity with their own free agents until then. If you're expecting the Red Sox to sign Jason Bay or Alex Gonzalez before then, don't hold your breath.Once a player gets this close to free agency, especially for a first-timer like Bay, they want to see what it's like. Epstein does not know how long that could delay the process...

Thanksgiving is usually a quiet time in baseball, though there have been some exceptions. In 2003, the Red Sox put on a full-court press to get Curt Schilling, with Theo Epstein even traveling to Arizona to woo the righthander and his family over turkey and stuffing. Red Sox GM Theo Epstein is said to be smitten with Kelly, which could be a sticking point in talks with Toronto if Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos insists on the 20-year-old being included in a deal. I absolutely hate the idea of the Red Sox getting Halladay. With Halladay, Josh Beckett, Jon Lester and...

The Red Sox used 11 starting pitchers last season, two more than the Yankees and one fewer than the Phillies. For even the best teams in baseball, the five-man rotation is simply a starting point. By June, pitchers who were in the spring training shadows can become critical.Discuss“You’re always looking for a No. 6, a No. 7, and a No. 8,’’ Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein said earlier...

The Phillies need a thirdbaseman. The Red Sox need to get rid of a thirdbaseman. I'm thinking swap meet. Mike Lowell is in the last year of his contract and is set to make $12M. However, it's being reported that Theo Epstein may be willing to eat half the contract to move him to make room for slugging Padres firstbaseman Adrian Gonzalez. At $6M for 1 year and a stopgap plan at 3rd, I'd...
