The Tigers announced yesterday that Tom Brookens would be the new first base and outfield and base running coach. Brookens is an organizational soldier and it's nice to see him get the opportunity to don the Old English D again. But it does raise the question about the qualifications or importance of positional coaches.

The Tigers have hired Tom Brookens as their first-base, outfield and base-running coach. Brookens, an infielder on the Tigers' 1984 championship team, spent the past five seasons as a minor league manager in the organization, compiling a 310-262 record with Class A Oneonta (2005-06), Class A West Michigan (2007) and Double-A Erie (2008-09).
