... but interesting to me might not be interesting to you. I'm ready to see Chris Johnson at third, Tommy Manzella at short and Edwin Maysonet at second. I'm ready to see Jason Castro behind the plate at some point. Let's say he begins the 2010 season in Round Rock and is up by the All-Star Break. The Astros will have a dramatically different look on the field and a dramatically different...

You don't like my ideas. You don't like Tal and Ed's ideas. You don't think Drayton ever had a good idea, which is ridiculous because I have inside knowledge he's working on a plan to add corny dogs to the menu at Minute Maid Park. You don't like Tommy Manzella and Chris Johnson. You don't like Lance Berkman and Michael Bourn. You think Brad Mills was a terrible hire. You don't like...

... Pence and 1B Lance Berkman. Every other position is open. Some are less open than others. SS Tommy Manzella and 2B Kaz Matsui probably will be in the Opening Day lineup. Manzella is important because the Astros believe he'd dramatically upgrade the defense. They don't expect him to hit much, but if he hits .100 during spring training, they'll have to look at other options....

... whether the Astros should save some money and go with a youth movement in 2010. Castro, Johnson, Tommy Manzella and company would probably struggle at first, but if they're big league material, they will find their way eventually. That's not the point of Justice's blog post, though. The Astros are apparently basing that decision on spring training performance. My question is this:...

... our current needs are catcher (to be filled soon by J.R. Towles and/or Jason Castro ), shortstop ( Tommy Manzella , Wladimir Sutil, Jiovanni Mier), and second base (one more year of Kazuo before we have to worry about it, and Figgins can play a decent 2B). The starting rotation isn't great right now , but as I discussed in a recent post, we have a lot of young pitching depth which...

... looking for the positives, it's that the Astros could be dramatically better defensively with Tommy Manzella at short and Jason Castro at catcher. I'm guessing Edwin Maysonet will end up at second and Chris Johnson at third. Before you write to tell me that this lineup won't generate nearly enough power, I already know that. I also can't think of a better alternative. If you're going...

... in this decade. This idea for this post came to mind after I commented on HLP's article about Tommy Manzella taking over the shortstop position next year, making that position defense-first, like it was in the Adam Everett era. My comment pointed out that Everett generally was accompanied by a stronger offensive performance at 3d base than the Astros received last season. As I cogitated,...

... and that seems to fit with Houston's plans. "At this point, we're prepared to commit to [rookie] Tommy Manzella playing shortstop," Wade said. "Tommy is ready to play in the big leagues, and we think Miggy is capable of playing third base. That's been discussed last year, and we didn't feel it was right to make the move at that point in time. [Geoff] Blum was playing well at...

... No more Brian Moehler, Chris Sampson, Yorman Bazardo or Kaz Matsui. No more wondering when or if Tommy Manzella or Chris Johnson can make it in the majors. No more crossing your fingers, hoping that Felipe Paulino finally puts it all together. No more begging and pleading for management to rush along Jason Castro or give J.R. Towles one more chance. With another $100 million, the...

... a contender in two years, but it’s highly unrealistic. You’re hedging your bets on Jason Castro, Tommy Manzella and Chris Johnson panning out as successes, Berkman and Oswalt playing with confidence and swagger again, not to mention just staying healthy, Carlos Lee hustling and second base somehow not being the same black hole that it’s been since Biggio hung em up.
