There was a fair amount of shock at Ford Motor Co. last week when the United Auto Workers turned down a package of contract concessions. Ford executives shouldn't have been surprised, however. They brought this on themselves. For nearly a year, Ford has maintained that it was different from General Motors and Chrysler. For one thing, Ford, alone among the once-big three, has neither sought government...

Ford's 2,215 page 2007 master contract with the UAW 1941 UAW-Ford contract Factory wages aren't Detroit's problem, and strikes are very rare in the auto industry nowadays. The real issue is the job classifications (see top photo of Ford's 2,215 page 2007 master contract with the UAW vs. the 1941 UAW-Ford contract below). Ford's UAW contract has lots of them, governing who can and who can't perform...

Fisker is negotiating with the UAW to begin working in the GM plant they are in the midst of buying in Delaware. I'd say it's surprising that a new car company like Fisker is ready to jump right into the Union pool, but what do I know about such things? (Source: Fisker, UAW aim to reach labor deal | Industry Summits | Reuters ). Based on his quotes, Fisker wants an experienced work force to start with....

... over the Wall Street debacle, they saved their vitriol for working people, churlishly blaming the UAW for Detroit’s woes, implicating Big Labor for its role in the recession by driving away our manufacturing base, and scolding poor people for trying to buy houses they couldn’t afford. The bankers who encouraged and profited from these “sub prime” loans were given a pass. Further bias was shown...

There’s no love lost between carmudgeon Peter Delorenzo and GM’s failed Car Czar, the exec whose singular inability to create compelling branding or class-leading products helped transform the world’s largest automaker into a nationalized welfare queen. No wait. Sorry. The self-styled Autoextremist hates the United Auto Workers (UAW). And now that the UAW has rejected [...]

Ford Motor Co., which, for now, barely escapes bankruptcy like the other Detroit automakers, goes to the UAW and says it needs the same thing the union gave GM and Chrysler to be competitive. And the UAW folks of Ford say forget it -- we've given enough. I guess they'd be happier if Ford declares bankruptcy and throws out the entire agreement.

This morning in a First on Fox Business I spoke to Ron Gettelfinger ,the UAW (United Auto Workers) president, about the UAW's vote against a deal with Ford.
