No better. No worse. The unemployment rate for the Kansas City metropolitan area was unchanged in September at 8.9 percent. The non-seasonally adjusted estimate was released this morning by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The Missouri rate is 3.2 percentage points (or 285,800 workers) higher than it was a year ago. But new data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics give cause for hope.

The jobless rate in Kansas rose from 7 percent to 7.4 percent in July, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said today. That's still better than the national average of 9.4 percent for that month. Missouri's unemployment rate of 9.3 percent stayed fairly steady.

In April 2009, there were 34,900 fewer payroll jobs in Kansas and 68,300 fewer in Missouri than there were in April 2008. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today that the unemployment rate in Kansas rose 2.2 percentage points over that year-to-year period, and the Missouri rate rose 2.7 percentage points.
