The Open Door shelter — which every day provides meals and showers to some 200 homeless men and women — would have closed sooner, but the city was able to convince the transit agency to delay a part of the line...

Business owners in Fort Lauderdale repeatedly tried to convince Douglas Schutt to stop boozing and living outdoors, but he refused. Business owners on Las Olas Boulevard knew him as a helpful, homeless man who washed cars and did other cleaning chores in exchange for a few dollars. Douglas Schutt, 58, died Sept. 9 from a head injury he sustained in an accident, the Broward Medical Examiner's Office...

A fire at a Spenard duplex Friday morning displaced three people and killed a dog, according to the Anchorage Fire Department. Firefighters were dispatched to 3421 Balchen Drive just before 10:30 a.m. to reports of heavy smoke and flames coming from one of the units. One adult and two children under age 4 were found already outside the home when firefighters arrived. They were not injured.
