DASB rejects reform

The De Anza Associated Student Body Senate rejected an election reform proposal last Wednesday that would bar senators from serving on the Senate Election Committee. Currently, the committee consists of at least three members from the senate and three members from Inter Club Council.

Follow the porcelain road

Approximately 170 new signs and directions of various sizes and colors will be placed on the De Anza College campus to help students and visitors navigate inside and around campus by the end of June. "There will be signs for almost every building, every quad, identifying every quad," said Donna Jones-Dulin, director of college services.

June 9 What happened: The finalist for the position of vice president of Student Services dropped out. Brian Murphy, president of De Anza College, said the finalist accepted the same position in Dallas, Texas. The search committee will continue searching for a new candidate in July in tandem with the search for vice president of Instruction.

Rodriguez retires

De Anza College police officer Ben Rodriguez will be retiring after 24 years of service to the college. A retirement reception was held for Rodriguez on June 11. Rodriguez's family, friends and fellow officers, as well as De Anza staff were all in attendance.

Smoke Haze

Dare to smoke on campus? No student is subject to fines or court citations for smoking on the De Anza College campus, and so far, no student been placed under probation for violating the campus's non-smoking policy. According to the Student Codes of Conduct, students are subject to disciplinary probation by Dean of Student Development Michele LeBleu-Burns if they are engaged in "willful or persistent...

Bank contract drafted

De Anza College students who want to carry one less card in their wallets will be able to do so by mid fall quarter. The contract between De Anza College and US Bank is pending final signatures. Once signed, the five-year contract will add ATM capability to the De Anza Associated Student Body Identification Card as soon as the end of fall quarter.

Tap H2O the way of the future?

Director of Food Services Patrick Gannon recently began catering advisory board meetings with pitchers of tap water after a faculty member argued against the safety of bottled water for the environment. Before a recent staff meeting, instructor Dave Barney sent an e-mail to Food Services requesting that the meeting be catered with pitchers of tap water instead of the traditional bottled water.

Author Blake Taylor came to De Anza College on June 4 to talk about his book "ADHD and Me: What I Learned From Lighting Fires at the Dinner Table." Taylor wrote the book hoping to educate people about Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and help other teens and children who have similar problems.

Melissa Cheponis is not a fan of structure. When she was younger, she used to hate field trips for that very reason. "Everything was planned out for us," she said. "No, I want to look at the sea lions for longer, I don't want to go to lunch!" Today, at age 17, Cheponis is not much different.
