We are staying in downtown San Francisco about a block from Union Square. Our hotel is the Parc 55. It is a massive 32 floor hotel that takes up a whole city block. We got our third upgrade of our trip and got a corner room on the 9th floor with windows overlooking downtown. We are in the middle of the shopping district and have all the flavor that comes with staying downtown in a large city such

The overarching theme of Miller's book is the glorification of rebellion by preaching false freedom. That's exactly what the Haight-Ashbury preached; it's exactly what drugs promise; and it's exactly what the Emergent Church movement promotes today. by Richard and Linda Nathan A phenomenon in evangelical circles, Blue Like Jazz by Donald ...

"And where did the pot go? In that hole or this one? And why would you want water in the bottom of the bong?" As a parent you don't always see the hard questions coming. When planning the vacation day trip into San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district, who knew I would have to explain the architecture of a bong to my sweet 16-year-old daughter? In retrospect, of course, any Dad with half a brain would...

The Haight-Ashbury Neighborhood Council just gave the Whole Foods/(unaffordable) condo project - which would have nested at Haight and Stanyan streets, where the world's scariest Cala Foods used to reside - a thumbs down. Have the NIMBYs won? According to Curbed's Sarah Hromack , maybe so. No one, including the city as well as Supe Ross Mirkarimi, really got on-board with the idea. Oh noes! Read more...

Is 690 Stanyan Street a dead man waking? Perhaps so, says the developer. The Whole Foods-pimped, Haight Ashbury Improvement Association-approved project, which would replace the now-defunct Cala Foods with 62 condos and a Whole Foods on ground level, has...

A pole banner from Haight-Ashbury. I was there , man. I mean, over the weekend, not, like back in ’69 , when the drugs were free and the women freer. (Or something.) +

I had a wonderful time in San Francisco, with only a few missteps. Like getting lost on my way back to the hotel and being the only person with all of my marbles intact on a very crowded, very scary street. After such a situation, I decided that, even if I had time, Haight-Ashbury was not on my list of must-sees. If I wanted to see strung-out characters, I didn't have to travel across town; all I...
