Cadet Christian Ramon Grado, son of Margaret and Ramon Grado of Sugar Land, completed cadet basic training at the U.S. Military Academy. Grado entered West Point on Reception Day, June 29, and has successfully completed six weeks of CBT. Areas of instruction included first aid; mountaineering; hand grenades; rifle marksmanship and nuclear, biological and chemical training.

Jesse Muhammad of Missouri City was surprised to hear that his blog received three awards in the 2009 annual Black Weblog Awards on Sept. 4. The results were based on popular vote. He won “Blog of the Year,” “Best Personal Blog” and “Best Twitter Microblog.”

A woman had her purse stolen Wednesday afternoon in the parking lot of a Wal-Mart store in Sugar Land, but the suspected thief was caught a short time later. Sugar Land spokeswoman Pat Pollicoff said the 26-year-old woman was in the parking lot of the store at 345 Texas 6 near U.S. 90A when a man came up to her and stole her purse at 3:45 p.m.

When Richmond Mayor Hilmar G. Moore first took office, he did so because no one else wanted the job. He was selected to fill an unexpired two-year mayoral term on Sept. 22, 1949. Tuesday marked the 60-year anniversary of that moment.

City Council members in Missouri City have scheduled an Oct. 5 vote on a proposed 1-cent increase in the 2009-10 property tax rate, trading additional cuts in city spending to allow for quicker action on capital construction projects.

Fort Bend County's property tax rate for next year will likely remain at the current year's level although county officials anticipate expenditures could increase by nearly 3 percent. County officials have set a series of public hearings on the tax-rate and budget proposals in October before their adoption on Oct. 20.
