Santa Claus is coming to town to switch on 500,000 Christmas lights lining the streets, trees and business of Houston's Uptown area on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26. His visit marks the 24th Annual Uptown Holiday Lighting hosted each year by TXU Energy. The free event is an area tradition that includes a parade down Post Oak Boulevard and a fireworks display.

Where does milk come from? Where does the pumpkin pie that many people love at this time of the year come from? The folks at the Texas AgriLife Extension Center for Harris County, with the help of several Houston-area independent school districts, are trying to help pupils get the answers to those questions.

Houston voters will head back to the polls beginning Monday, Nov. 30, to decide runoff elections for mayor, controller and five city council positions, including two district seats that serve the city's west side. Runoffs also will be held for two seats on the Houston Independent School District Board of Trustees and for two seats on the Bellaire city council.

The Harris County Hospital District opened its Southwest Eligibility Center, a new and larger location for its registering of patients for hospital district services. The center is one of five locations across Harris County used by HCHD.

The Alief Independent School District's board of trustees voted 5-2 last week to join other school districts in the region in a civil lawsuit challenging the Texas Education Agency's interpretation of a state law that applies to their grading policies.

Christina Schwedler held on as her friends dropped out of Girl Scouts after elementary school. She had started something and intended to finish it, even if it meant she would be one of few high school students who remain in Girl Scouts. And very early on, Schwedler had her eye on the prestigious Girl Scouts Gold Award, which could only be earned after advancing through Girl Scouts.
