Annual Uptown Holiday Lighting event gearing up

Santa Claus is coming to town to switch on 500,000 Christmas lights lining the streets, trees and business of Houston's Uptown area on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26. His visit marks the 24th Annual Uptown Holiday Lighting hosted each year by TXU Energy. The free event is an area tradition that includes a parade down Post Oak Boulevard and a fireworks display.

Early voting for runoff begins Nov. 30

Houston voters will head back to the polls beginning Monday, Nov. 30, to decide runoff elections for mayor, controller and five city council positions, including two district seats that serve the city's west side. Runoffs also will be held for two seats on the Houston Independent School District Board of Trustees and for two seats on the Bellaire city council.

School board going to court against state

The Alief Independent School District's board of trustees voted 5-2 last week to join other school districts in the region in a civil lawsuit challenging the Texas Education Agency's interpretation of a state law that applies to their grading policies.

Early voting starts soon

Early voting for the Dec. 12 runoff election begins Nov. 30 and ends Dec. 8. There are 21 early voting locations available. Three of them are located in the Alief/Sharpstown area. Girl Scout completes final achievement

Christina Schwedler held on as her friends dropped out of Girl Scouts after elementary school. She had started something and intended to finish it, even if it meant she would be one of few high school students who remain in Girl Scouts. And very early on, Schwedler had her eye on the prestigious Girl Scouts Gold Award, which could only be earned after advancing through Girl Scouts.

Area organizations have come together to host a health and resources fair where residents can ask medical questions free of charge. The fair is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Nov. 21 at the Alief Independent School District's Elsik Ninth Grade Center, 6767 S. Dairy Ashford.

Miss Black Texas pageant takes place this weekend

Seventeen Texas girls and women will compete for the titles of Miss Black Texas USA, Miss Black Teen Texas USA and Ms. Black Texas USA this coming weekend Nov. 20 through Nov. 22. The pageant will be held at the Hilton Houston Southwest, 6780 Southwest Fwy.

Alief Super Neighborhood Council needs added input

The Alief Super Neighborhood Council has scheduled a meeting to discuss its annual Super Neighborhood Action Plan, or SNAP. The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m., Nov. 24 at the CenterPoint Energy Building at 12330 Bellaire Blvd. Attendants are asked to drive through the east gate closest to Cook Road and enter the building through the patio area.

Most college students have almost constant companions: Textbooks. But in two of Houston Community College Southwest's classes this semester, students don't touch a single textbook. Instead, they carry a thin, paper-sized device that provides them with the printed material needed for class at their fingertips.
