A: The Houston Fire Department offers a free one-to-one fire safety class for youths ages 2-17 who have more than a curiosity of fire. The department has maintained a 98-percent success rate in stopping participants' fire-setting behaviors.

Alief resident Bill Bingham feels people are becoming more accepting of the phenomenon of near death experiences. He is the founder and facilitator of the Houston Near Death Experience Support Group. "When I first started this thing in 1992," Bingham said, "people were coming for validation because everyone around them told them they were crazy."

Since taking office four months ago, Houston City Council member Jolanda "Jo" Jones says she has learned that residents get more attention when they appear before council and its public access cameras. "Come before the council. It's on TV," Jones told about 40 members of the Alief Super Neighborhood Council during its April 22 meeting.

A discovery made by the Institute of Biosciences and Technology of the Texas A&M Health Science Center has given life and hope to a River Oaks family. Born healthy in 1997, Caroline DeLuca, daughter of Elizabeth and Anthony DeLuca, suffered a seizure when she was 2 days old. It was the first of many to come.

Bellaire High School debate coach Russell Rach's forensics team is the nation's last and best argument in support of debate. After a year of wins from debating both sides of the year's question from contest sponsors Bickel & Brewer Foundation and New York University, the six-member Bellaire team won the National Policy Forum in New York City on April 26.
