It's the only community center in Brays Oaks, but on a sunny Tuesday, only the weight room, basketball court and one meeting room were getting a workout. Bruce Krewinghaus, who's always looking for meeting space for his civic groups, could hardly believe it.

Hundreds gathered on Oct. 17 in Alief's Durga Bari Society to celebrate India's Diwali, or "festival of lights," which this year fell on the same day as Kali Puja, the worship of Kali, one of the forms of the goddess of power within the Hindu religion.

On the outside, Raja Banga's house looks like any other house. But every Sunday morning, the inside transforms into a meeting place for generations of Indians and Indian-Americans, whose collective hands and voices sing and drum out the songs of their homeland. Banga, a 35-year-old geologist, teaches Indians young and old how to play the tabla, a pair of drums popular in Indian music.

Twice annually, the Brays Oaks Management District opens its treasury to award competitive cash grants to community-based organizations located within the district. The deadline for the next cycle of grants is Oct. 31. The grants will support events and projects scheduled for January through June 2010.

County government has its limits, but citizens in Mission Bend want a change. In a meeting with the county judges of Harris and Fort Bend, representatives from 13 of 39 homeowner groups living on Houston's far west side described problems with crime, unregulated development, gang graffiti and illegal dumping and asked what county leaders can do to address them.
