Melissa Binstock, 21, of Meyerland began writing at the age of 15. Then, journaling for an English class, she found that writing about her health issues was therapeutic. When a teacher submitted her essay on her fight with her eating disorder to a national writing contest in 2005, Binstock won a Gold Key Award from the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers.

A group of Texas artists will donate a portion of their art-auction proceeds to a local nonprofit at the 13th annual Avenue Community Development Corporation's Art on the Avenue event. More than 250 artists will display their work at Art on the Avenue, a evening of entertainment, food and a silent auction at the Winter Street Studios, 2101 Winter St., on Saturday, Nov. 14, 6-10 p.m.

By this time next year, a new West University Place police station may be nearing completion as an addition to City Hall. West U. City Council voted unanimously Oct. 26 to ask architect Jeff Gerber to draw plans for a new, two-story station on the west end of the existing City Hall, 3800 University Blvd.

A West University Place police officer who is appealing his termination last month is scheduled to meet Oct. 29 with City Manager Michael Ross and Police Chief Ken Walker. The 2 p.m. hearing is not open to the public, Ross said.

In 2006, St. James' Boy Scout Troop 212 in Third Ward was struggling to survive. It was a dying troop with a long, rich history. Lionel Jellins took over the troop in late 2006 as part of his mission to provide boys in the inner city with the full scouting experience such as leadership development, overnight camping, scout summer camps and more.

Back in Houston after a stint working in Australia, where Halloween isn't widely celebrated, the McLendons decided to compensate this year. The family's yard on McClendon Street near the Medical Center sports pumpkin lights, a spider web and two large, inflatable black cats with swiveling heads. Many more supplies waited inside for a party set for Friday, Oct. 30.

Bruce and Luisa Ward were just trying to do good deeds for cancer patients visiting the Texas Medical Center from Italy when the couple made authentic pizza in their backyard. But after getting rave reviews, the Missouri City couple decided to go into the pizza business. Now they own Luigi's Pizzeria, at 3700 Almeda in Midtown.
