Festival recreates life on the farm

Armand Bayou Nature Center volunteers will hold the 28th annual Martyn Farm Fall Festival, Nov. 14-15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors to the festival will see volunteers dressed in period costume make syrup from sugar cane, churn butter, prepare cheese, bail hay and make soap. A wide variety of other demonstrators, vendors and entertainers will also be on hand.

A $3.5 million project to restore Sylvan...

A $3.5 million project to restore Sylvan Beach in La Porte is on pace to finish next month, officials said. By the end of the year, visitors to the beach on Galveston Bay at Fairmont Parkway will have access to about 2,000 feet of shoreline, from just north of the Sylvan Beach Park Pavilion to the park's northern boundary, La Porte Economic Development Coordinator Stacey Osborne said.

Ahoy mate! Pirates Bay to drop anchor in May

Baytown's $11 million Pirates Bay Water Park is halfway through construction, and city officials said the project is ahead of schedule. With the opening of the new park on the horizon, the city has begun preparations for a job recruitment campaign. About 60 new positions will be created in conjunction with the water park, including a new aquatics coordinator to oversee the facility.
