Dawn Kubisz gathers her thoughts with ease but wrestles to form the words. Her fingers splay and bend out of turn, so writing is not an alternative. Regardless, about two years ago, Kubisz sat down at a typewriter and completed a 40-page nonprofit application. Six weeks later, it was approved, and A New Dawn Pet Adoption was born.

A $3.5 million project to restore Sylvan Beach in La Porte is on pace to finish next month, officials said. By the end of the year, visitors to the beach on Galveston Bay at Fairmont Parkway will have access to about 2,000 feet of shoreline, from just north of the Sylvan Beach Park Pavilion to the park's northern boundary, La Porte Economic Development Coordinator Stacey Osborne said.

Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country focusing on fifth graders. Although the start and end dates can vary slightly on the different campuses, Red Ribbon Week generally takes place the last full week in October, with the weekends before and following the last full week included as appropriate celebration dates.

Baytown's $11 million Pirates Bay Water Park is halfway through construction, and city officials said the project is ahead of schedule. With the opening of the new park on the horizon, the city has begun preparations for a job recruitment campaign. About 60 new positions will be created in conjunction with the water park, including a new aquatics coordinator to oversee the facility.

A $113,000 budget allocation has been set aside to reshape the image of Deer Park, while an experienced Economic Development Coordinator has been hired to attract restaurants, shops and other businesses to the area. City officials said these projects mark a new beginning for historic Deer Park.
