City Council on Tuesday voted unanimously to extend its contract with Graphic Packaging International for paper trash bags. The contract with the McKinney-based firm carries a projected price tag of $1.36 million for a year’s worth of paper bags beginning Oct. 1.

Baytown City Manager Garry Brumback says recent ethics complaints about him are groundless. Specifically, Brumback says, a 45-page packet presented to City Council on Aug. 28 by former Baytown resident Artie Presley is a “hatchet job.” Presley gave copies of the packet to Deputy City Manager Bob Leiper, who distributed them to the council.

Members of the South Houston Area Recreational Kiters (SHARK) let their worries blow away in the wind with colorful, hand constructed kites. The kiters gather the third Saturday of each month throughout Houston and the Ship Channel area to launch their custom kites varying in sizes from 8-by-10 inches to over 50 feet long.

The Pasadena school board on Aug. 26 approved a budget with a nearly $24 million deficit and no proposed tax rate increase. Superintendent Kirk Lewis said the district can afford to make up the difference from its reserve fund, but he assailed the Texas Legislature’s impact on school finance through its 2006 passage of House Bill 1.
