We know that one of the major sources of the greenhouse gasses that are driving climate change is the coal the we burn to generate electricity. If nothing is done to change that, the all of the other stuff we might do would not be enough to reign in our warming climate... making 650 ppm CO2 much more likely than 350. One would think that it might be easy for Democrats to pass some sort of climate change...

Big news! The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee has just announced its witness list. It's an interesting list that raises hope and questions, and I've uncovered some facts about the witnesses that you can see after the jump. But meanwhile, down in West Virginia, longtime Senator Jay Rockefeller IV has been a quiet friend to the LGBT community. Perhaps too quiet. He has cosponsored...

Roll Call (sub req'd) is reporting that 30 Senators sent a letter to Harry Reid demanding that the final bill include a robust, Medicare-like, Public Option. Sen. Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia is upset that a health care bill poised for approval by the Finance Committee would turn nearly a half-trillion dollars over to insurance companies, whose profits he says are "out of sight."

I want to call it a postmortem, but since they aren't getting around to voting for a while as they wait for the gears to grind over at CBO, I can't quite call it that. Speaking of the vote, Ezra Klein makes an excellent point and does good reporting this morning. The reporting is that none of the Democrats is a swing vote in the sense that they would vote no to kill the bill, but that four of them...

So, here's where we are on health care. The U.S. Senate Finance Committee has finished its markup work on the Baucus health care bill. They'll take a vote on Tuesday. According to the Washington Post, Senators Ron Wyden and Jay Rockefeller are considering voting against the Baucus bill: If all 10 Republicans on the panel vote no, two Democratic defections would be enough to send Baucus and the Obama...

Last week Senators Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and John Kerry (D-MA) introduced a cap and trade bill. Their version of the national energy tax offers a goal of cutting carbon emissions down by 20 percent by 2020--cute numbers. But that cuteness, if it becomes law, will stifle economic growth and inhibit job growth. Let's take a look at some cap and trade news. Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-WV), who opposes cap...
