America's new subprime shanty-towns

In this chilling BBC clip, a newsteam ventures to one of LA's new shantytowns made up of people who've lost their homes in the subprime meltdown and now live in tents, improvised shacks or RVs on abandoned land. It's the contemporary Hooverville, and, as the Subliterate Cinephile notes, I wonder why I found out about this from the BBC and not US media. Link (via The Subliterate Cinephile...

Late Nite: Compassionate California Conservatism

What a depressing juxtaposition this is. I got these two items via e-mail literally minutes apart. The first is the video at the top of this post: a BBC report about a "Dubyaville" shantytown in Los Angeles full of people who lost their homes in the mortgage meltdown. Meanwhile, at the same time, all the Republicans in the California state assembly are working to keep yacht and private jet sales tax-free....

Subprime shanty towns

But remember, the most important issue of this election is whether Barrack Obama condemns his pastor vigorously enough. Otherwise, white people might get scared and will be forced to vote for another crazy, incompetent white guy who will make things even worse.

US Shanty Towns

The BBC has a report on the shanty towns that are appearing outside Los Angeles because of the fall out in the credit market. One guy they interview says: “I lost my home, settled my bills, sold it for nothing compared to what I bought it for and now I’m homeless.” It's got that painful look-what-the-world-is coming-to [...]

BBC does story on L.A. Sub-Prime Shanty Towns.

The BBC recently ran a story about tent villages popping up in our back yard, modern day Hoovervilles. The big question is why is this news in England and not here? Have I just missed all the coverage on it? If so, I am not alone. A commenter on the Subliterate Cinephile blog that ran a [...]

Bushvilles? Greenspanvilles?

Reports of tent cities in Southern California due to foreclosures have been circulating for some time now, but this one from the BBC looks like the real deal. You've got to hand it to anyone who can be optimistic under those circumstances. The first lady interviewed says, "Once I do get a job full time, instead of just one day a week, I'll be able to save my money, get a car, to make it easier to go...

Hooterville, Chimpyville, What's The Difference?

80 years, YouTube and a United States press that can't be bothered to report the truth. It's so much easier to worry about whether or not Heather Mills got as much money as she deserved for being married to one of the Beatles. Or whether Brtiney should pay the lawyer fees for her ex-husband. Anything except how the realities of the sub-prime crisis are affecting those who've lost everything. People...

It's The Economy, Stupid

I'm haunted by this video from BBC News, and the fact that I haven't seen this report in U.S. news media. The Morning Journal sums it up: "Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are jumping all over President Bush's handling of the economy but not offering any concrete solutions of their own; don't hold your breath waiting. Republican John McCain has given an general thumbs-up to the Bush Administration's...
