Tim Nudd explains: Last October, [DirecTV] had the spot with with Craig T. Nelson and Heather O'Rourke from Poltergeist, which was unfortunate, given that O'Rourke (who played Carol Anne) died tragically in 1988 at age 12. Now, a year later...

What are the ethical boundaries when it comes to a celebrity or movie star after the person in question is dead? Obviously, Sony has no problem releasing an unfinished concert film for the recently departed king of pop Michael Jackson. And judging from the projected box office tracking, people are interested in paying for the chance to see Jackson dance and sing on the big screen, for one last time....

I thought perhaps I was the only one who found this commercial to be in horrendous taste, but apparently Gawker did, too. David Spade, whose buddy films and general camaraderie with SNL castmate Chris Farley arguably carried the show through the mid to late 90s, doesn’t seem to be doing much these days. But he still has time [...]

The series, which we've generally liked a lot, has gotten dicey with the introduction of dead celebs.

They use dead celebs in ads all the time and it doesn't bother me, so why does the new DirecTV commercial with David Spade and Chris Farley irritate and disgust me so much? For one, it's badly made. Unfunny and not very clever. Plus, it might be too soon, and the way that Farley died... it's just a very strange ad. I wonder why Spade even agreed to do it. ( DirecTV has done this before .) Filed under:...

(ChattahBox)—DirecTV is taking some heat from Chris Farley fans, for reprising his popular dim-witted, but lovable character in “Tommy Boy” to sell subscriptions to its satellite TV service. Chris Farley died in 1997 from a drug overdose, but his “Tommy Boy” character is shown interacting with David Spade in a new ad. Critics of [...]

DirectV has been recreating iconic movie moments in a series of television commercials. The one that has gained the most attention recently is the one with Chris Farley and David Spade in the 1995 movie Tommy Boy. Farley died in 1997, twelve years ago. That’s too recent for many of his fans who are upset [...] © 2009 The Inspiration Room

I’m glad Tim posted this . I had the same reaction of “Oooooh.” Feels wrong. But not just for the dead movie star thing, but because apparently Spade’s overcome his not wanting to talk about Farley’s death. Long as the check clears I guess.

This Is Just Plain Wrong of the Day: Dear marketers: Stop bringing celebrities back from the dead to hawk your shit. The new DirecTV ad that grave-robs Chris Farley is a big bag of DON’T DO THIS. Shame on David Spade for allowing his dear departed friend to shill for things he can’t use to make money he isn’t alive to spend. [ via .]

Wow, some people are completely pissed off about this new DirecTV ad featuring David Spade and the late Chris Farley. Farley’s role is spliced together from his movie Tommy Boy and David Spade appears to be having a conversation with him. We’ve had everyone from Fred Astaire to Nat King Cole peddling soda — and don’t [...]

This will be a fairly short and offbeat edition of news bits. There isn't a whole lot of interesting news to cover today. David Spade sells out Chris Farley in DirecTV ad I saw this ad the other day and, I'm sorry, but it rubbed me the wrong way. I'm no huge Chris Farley nut, but didn't anyone think this is a wee bit insulting to the dead comedian? Take a look yourself. /Film seems to agree with me....

There has been much controversy over the recent Direct TV ad with Chris Farley and David Spade. As most people know, Farley is deceased, he died of a drug overdose back in the late 90’s. The scene in the commercial is the “fat guy in a little coat” from the film “Tommy Boy”. Some people think Spade is [...] This post was written by the Super Media Blog Chris Farley Ad Controversy
