An unusual video clip from Sen. Barack Obama's tour of the Chrysler Stamping Plant in Sterling Heights, MI today. A reporter tries to question Obama about helping automakers. "Hold on one second there, sweetie ," he says. The reporter's tag line: "This sweetie never did get an answer to that question."

A female reporter in Michigan takes a page from Michael Moore's playbook. Barack Obama's response is one Moore would never get.

Maybe this whole "matinee idol" treatment has gone to Obama's head: To be totally honest, I did not get as worked up about this as, say, the Clinton campaign would like me to be. So I've been trying to imagine if -- as the HRC folks might argue -- it's equivalent to Hillary calling a black reporter "boy." Or if McCain saying the same thing would read the same way.

A reporter asks Obama a question, and he tells her to hold on a second there, sweetie . Charming. (Transcript below the fold.) Better still, it's not the first time . While flirting with female factory workers in Allentown, he called one "sweetie," a paternalistic way to address a woman if there ever was one. It might have worked had he been trying to do his best imitation of Lily Tomlin's Ernestine,...

Today in Michigan, via Marc Ambinder : Instead of answering a reporter's question, he calls her "sweetie" and says that he'll do a press avail, but, recalling a certain waffle incident, he never does . You see, he preens for the media rather than talk to them. Video after the jump.

Barack Obama has a “bad habit” of addressing “all kinds of people” as “Sweetie” in casual conversation, although he’s trying to quit . Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama has apologized to WXYZ reporter Peggy Agar for calling her “sweetie” during a campaign stop Wednesday in Sterling Heights. Obama apologized in a voicemail he left on Agar’s cell phone at 3:16 p.m: “Hi Peggy. This...

Like Cara, I don't respond well to "sweetie." Obama has apologized to the reporter : “Second apology is for using the word ’sweetie.’ That's a bad habit of mine. I do it sometimes with all kinds of people. I mean no disrespect and so I am duly chastened on that front.” Indeed, it appears to be a habit . Over at Broadsheet, Rebecca Traister explains why it doesn't matter that he "meant no disrespect,"...

Likely Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama this week found himself under one of those unflattering spotlights -- the kind that shines on small utterances, making them appear brighter and bigger than they might otherwise have been -- when he called female reporter Peggy Agar "sweetie," after the reporter at Detroit's ABC-TV affiliate approached him during his visit to the Chrysler LLC plant...

Trying to help him out with working class white voters, perhaps? The AP reports (via Memeo): Democrat John Edwards is endorsing former rival Barack Obama, fresh signs of the party establishment embracing the likely nominee even as Hillary Rodham Clinton refuses to give up her long-shot candidacy. Edwards was to appear with Obama in Grand Rapids, [...]
