Adam Savage of Mythbusters basically busted the myth of RFID security - and the Discovery Channel wouldn’t air the segment. Here he talks at the HOPE conference about the experience.

It's amazing to watch just how sensitive some companies are concerning the rather well-known security vulnerabilities associated with RFID tags and smart cards. But that never seems to stop...

Filed under: Misc. Gadgets Although it's no secret that RFID is easily hacked (see: train passes , passports , credit cards , one billion other cards , etc .) it's still not necessarily common knowledge, and it sounds like the major credit card companies want to keep it that way -- according to Adam Savage, Mythbusters was all set to do a show exposing the weak security behind most RFID implementations...

Seems that the idea was killed by lawyers under pressure from the credit card industry. Or maybe not; the person who started this rumor has retracted his comments. Or maybe those same lawyers made him...

Adam Savage, of the excellent ‘Mythbusters’ programme(*) reports that they were going to do a segment on RFID chips only to have the lawyers descend from Visa, American Express etc. Texas Instruments comes on along with chief legal counsel for American Express, Visa, Discover, and everybody else… They were way, way outgunned and they absolutely made [...]
