Microsoft is preparing to pull its TV ads featuring comedian Jerry Seinfeld and Microsoft's co-founder and chairman Bill Gates. Microsoft spokesman Frank Shaw said the end of the Seinfeld ads was planned well in advance, and wasn't coming in response to any criticism of the spots. "All along we said we were having a teaser campaign," he said. "We're getting ready to start the second phase. This was...

Looks like skepticism was the right reaction when Microsoft announced it was hiring Jerry Seinfeld as its new $10 million pitchman. Seinfeld's first commercial starring Bill Gates is out -- shot in a mall shoe store -- and it's not going to help Microsoft look any cooler: As SAI's Henry Blodget noted last month: The good news for Microsoft is that being cool has never been a part of its success formula....

Here it is. The first Microsoft advertisement featuring comedian Jerry Seinfeld. It’s not clear yet if this is the one directed by French director Michel Gondry. But I hope not, because it’s really not very good. The advertisement is Seinfeld and recently retired Microsoft founder Bill Gates spending some time shoe shopping in a mall. I [...]

There's a lot of chatter out there, how do you know when to listen and when not to? This one's been germinating for awhile now. About a month ago I was having drinks with my friend Matt and he made a point I hadn't heard before about the election: "Sarah Palin's handlers let the chatter get to them." Basically what he was saying is that if they had really been good at their jobs they never would have...

I wasn't going to comment on Microsoft's new ad campaign featuring Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates buddying around, but the response among the press and bloggers is almost universally negative -- often in extreme ways, and I don't get why there's such a virulent negative reaction. Just a few examples: Tip for MS: Fire the Advertising Agency MSFT Ad is to PC/Mac Campaign as Zune is to iPod Bill Gates,...

I saw the new TV ad that Microsoft produced with Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates. It made me want to buy a new pair of shoes. And eat some cake.

Microsoft is pulling the ill-received ad campaign featuring comedian Jerry Seinfeld and Microsoft co-founder and chairman Bill Gates. The corporation denies that the commercial failure of the spots has anything to do with the decision to discontinue the campaign. “All along we said we were having a teaser campaign,” Microsoft spokesman Frank Shaw said in a statement [...]

Today marks the debut of the new Windows ad campaign, with the first of a series of new ads featuring Jerry Seinfeld and at least in this one, Bill Gates. Our thanks to Ina Fried at CNET for finding the YouTube version : While comments over on Ina’s blog haven’t been entirely positive (she described reaction more as “head-scratching”), this is obviously a teaser ad. Using Bill Gates, who has worldwide...

When $300 million dollars is spent on advertising involving Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates shopping for shoes, it makes me think, “What’s this got to do with Microsoft'” Well, Microsoft wants you to know that it’s more hip than Apple. The two things that make Jerry Seinfeld cool in this video: 1. He’s eating a churro. 2. He [...]

Tonight Microsoft aired its first ad featuring Jerry Seinfield. The ad (including Seinfield) is part of a new $300 million ad campaign Microsoft has put together to try and breathe new life in to the Windows operating system. The 90 second ad spot is compromised mainly of shoe-banter between Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfield in a [...]

Anyone read that Fast Company cover story a few months about about how Crispin Porter + Bogusky were going to save Microsoft? It didn't occur to me until just now, but the realization of that has been the Seinfeld / Gates ads . If I had some extra time, I'd write about these commercials as an attempt to do some creative class warfare with Apple's "I'm a PC" campaign.
