The last major piece of the puzzle that was missing from Gmail was voice and video chat. Not anymore ; if you have a webcam and a microphone, you can now video chat with your friends directly from Gmail by installing this plugin . The plugin works in all major browsers (I’ve tried it in the latest version of Firefox) and installs on all of them automatically. After you’ve installed it, start a chat...

Today Google started rolling out voice and video chat inside Gmail—but it requires a free browser plug-in download , and, obviously, a webcam. Googler Justin Uberti explains: Once you install the plug-in, to start a video chat, just click on the "Video & more" menu at the bottom of your Gmail chat window, and choose "Start video chat." You'll have a few seconds to make sure you look presentable while...

Posted by Justin Uberti, Software Engineer I'm a big user of Gmail chat. Being able to switch from email to chat as needed, all within the same app, is really great for productivity. But people can only type so fast, and even with our new emoticons , there are still some things that just can't be expressed in a chat message. That's why today we're launching voice and video chat -- right inside Gmail....

Google has added video conferencing to its chat function in Gmail. The new service required a plugin, but once installed is as simple to use as chat itself. As anticipated in the post about Gmail SMS , video chat is the next big that will be added to Gmail. Justin Uberti says that video chat will be added today, along with voice chat. "We've tried to make this an easy-to-use, seamless experience, with high-quality audio and video. And we've built this product using Internet standards, such as XMPP, RTP, and the newly-standardized H.264/SVC video codec."...

Okay, Google has added Voice and Video Chat right into Gmail. Read all about it here, here and here or log into Gmail and see if Google has activated your account or just watch the video: I wonder if this will really take away market share from Skype, MSN and other chat options. What do you [...]

Truthfully, I only use Gmail and Gmail chat to communicate with two select individuals (you know who you are). But now, thanks to the marvel of modern technology, we can talk it up with streaming video. Oh happy day! You ever videochatting with a blogger that's only left bed to let the dog out and eat three bowls of cereal? And on a side note: did that just make your loins tingle? Because it did mine....

I've been looking for a better web-based video chat service for a while. I'm not sure that Google's new offering is going to take the place of Skype for me, but at least it's another option out there. Rafe Needleman gave it a shot and felt that it used up...

In what is probably a clear challenge to VOIP services such as Skype, Google has now introduced video and voice functionality to their Google Talk gadget inside Gmail. However, some of you will NOT see it yet as Gmail is doing their usual and rolling it out slowly to users. So some of you will have [...]
