We head back to NC tomorrow. Had some great chow, and a lot of good times here in Delaware. I'm packing up for the flight home tomorrow (oy, please let the Philly airport not be a hellhole), and watching Fox Movie Channel. This weekend the network is playing all the Planet of the Apes classics this weekend, along with documentaries, promo films and documentaries -- calling it Channel of the Apes ....

As George Taylor in the finale of Planet of the Apes , Charlton Heston pounded the surf-drenched sand and damned mankind to hell for atomic warfare when he realized he was back on Earth, something most viewers surmised far sooner, since the apes were speaking English. He warned the world that “Soylent Green is people!” in the closing scenes of that holocaust movie, long after most supporting characters...

Charlton Heston was 83 years old . He was great as Moses, but when I was a young boy, that chariot race in Ben Hur was one of the most exciting things I had ever seen. Still, my favorite Heston movie remains Planet of the Apes. Maybe because I also read the book by Pierre Boulle , which I remember as being quite wonderful, or perhaps because I was in high school in Wisconsin when this appeared on...

The Scotsman frets about the possibility of a Chimpanzee-Human hybrid: A LEADING scientist has warned a new species of “humanzee,” created from breeding apes with humans, could become a reality unless the government acts to stop scientists experimenting. In an interview with The Scotsman, Dr Calum MacKellar, director of research at the Scottish Council on Human Bioethics, [...]

Imagine that final beach scene in Planet of the Apes, but substitute every small patch of sand for a chain restaurant and that'll give you an idea of where the NY restaurant scene might be heading – all blown up, with Charlton Heston eventually smashing his fists into a huge pile of thermal cardboard coffee cup sleeves instead of foamy surf. Just a few weeks after Heston's 2nd birthday in 1926, the...

Via the LAT: Charlton Heston, 84; Oscar-winning actor played larger-than-life figures Heston died Saturday at his Beverly Hills home, said family spokesman Bill Powers. In 2002, he had been diagnosed with symptoms similar to those of Alzheimer’s disease. A video overview of his life can be found here. I must confess, the role that most sticks in [...]

The Huskers took game two from Texas Tech 5-2 as some guy called Thad Weber delivered a career-high 11 strike outs, giving up only five hits and two earned runs over 7.2 innings. I find it odd that we're supposed to believe that this is the same guy who gave up five runs in the first inning and eight overall before being replaced in the third inning at Stanford. Clearly, something has happened to...

Sad news tonight, as Hollywood legend Charlton Heston has passed away . Heston as 'Taylor' in Planet of the Apes (1968) I'm a fan of several of his sci-fi and western flicks, though I have to admit I've never seen the acclaimed Ben-Hur or The Ten Commandments . One of my favorite Heston moments has to be the final scene of Planet of the Apes , and what better time to watch it again?

CNN: Charlton Heston dies at 84. I grew up with Charlton Heston. This latter day John Wayne epitomizes for me a certain type of actor: the hypermasculine lead with a martyr complex, whose on-screen testosteronity was exceeded only by his off-screen right wing looniness. Chuck was the Man . . . well, until Mel Gibson [...]
