The Security Council today decided to keep United Nations and French peacekeepers in Côte d’Ivoire through 31 January 2009 to help stage free and fair elections set for late November, emphasizing the importance of the international community’s continuing support in helping the West African country strengthen its electoral systems and processes.

The United Nations peacekeeping mission in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI) today dismantled the last military post along the so-called Green Line between the Government-controlled south and the north of the country, where former Forces Nouvelles rebels are based, in line with a peace agreement signed last year.

The Peace and Security Council of the African Union (AU), at its 143rd meeting held on 24 July 2008, received a briefing on the implementation of the Ouagadougou Political Agreement and the Additional Agreements, from the AU Special Representative for Côte d’Ivoire, Ambassador Ambroise Nyonsaba. Council also received a statement from the Representative of the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire.

I have just seen that Burkina's president, Blaise Compaore, has been meeting this week with George Bush. Burkina is currently on the UN Security Council. The two presidents were discussing Zimbabwe and Darfur among other things. Burkina Faso has qualified...
