Port-Louis, Mauritius – Females outnumber m ales in Mauritius, which has a total population of 1,268,835, according to statistics published in Port-Louis on Saturday. The figures published by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) indicated that as at 1 July, 2008, the country had 626,741 males and 642,094 females, giving a sex r atio of 97.6 males per 100 females.

Port-Louis, Mauritius (PANA) - The Prime Minister of Mauritius, Navin Ramgoolam, announced here Wednesday, during a special session of the Parliament, that Mauritians would go to the polls 19 September to chose a new president. The current president's term of office will end 30 September.

Taifa Stars board a Port Louis bound flight today for a return leg tie of the 2010 African Nations/World Cup formality qualifier tie against Mauritius to be played in Curepipe on Saturday. Stars have already been shown the exit door of the qualifiers after poor show and now seek pride in Saturday's clash rather than qualifying.

Port-Louis, Mauritius - Demostrators Friday protested against the building of a hotel on the Ile-aux-Bénitiers in the Black River district of western Mauritius, saying the area "is a natural reserve for birds and tortoises". Residents of the area told PANA here "the hotel project does not agree with the policy to make Mauritius 'a sustainable island' as declared by the government".

Port-Louis, Mauritius - About 200 Bangladeshi workers, employed by Soniawear factory in Tyack, Rivière des Anguilles in the southern part of the Island, Wednesday began a strike action against the introduction of a 'bit-by-bit' payment system by the company, a spokesperson for the workers' union told PANA.

Port-Louis, Mauritius - The Mauritian Ministry of Agroprocessing and Fisheries will soon enact laws to control sea cucumber fishing, an official source told PANA here. An official from the ministry said on Tuesday evening that the decision was aimed at ensuring a sustainable exploitation of the marine resource.

Port-Louis, Mauritius - The Central Statistics Office (CSO) indicated Tuesday that the number of people killed on Mauritian roads grew by 7% (from 71 to 76) between January and June 2008, compared to the corresponding period last year. A total of 1,551 casualties were reported during the same period, compared to 1,530 for the corresponding period of 2007, representing an increase of 1.4%.
