Occasions that can be widely and immediately seen as a bright spot for humanity are few and far between Are we making too much of the 20th anniversary celebrations, which culminate in a big party in Berlin tonight, to mark the fall of the Berlin Wall? Possibly, but I doubt it. We do suffer selective anniversary-itis, but it marks a rare event. Such occasions, those that can be widely and immediately...

IT MUST be deliberate. Tito Mboweni , SA's vainest public official, turns up for an interview unshaven and wearing what appears to be a Nelson Mandela shirt. This is a huge departure for the South African Reserve Bank governor who is usually immaculately dressed in a suit and tie. Stunned, we ask if he is trying to copy Mandela. Mboweni retorts: "Of course Madiba would not wear this shirt."...

US born Muslim Major Nidal Malik Hasan, the army psychiatrist who turned his guns on his fellow soldiers at an army camp in Texas yesterday, was apparently unhappy about being sent to Iraq or Afghanistan. So the horror of Kabul, Baghdad and other cities where terrorist attacks kill scores of people on a daily basis has hit back, in a Texas military stronghold, of all places. But how is it, that 20...

Filed under: News , Opinion , Race and Civil Rights As a black American who grew up in touch with his culture, I couldn't wait to visit Africa when I was growing up. But the best I could do during my college years was to minor in Southern African studies while attending Rutgers University as a journalism major. Soon afterward, however, I made a trip to Senegal and Gambia and fell in love with what...

Every expat can relate to this story. Gerhard Brand now lives quietly in west Clare after having spent most of his career working in prisons in South Africa, including Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was famously incarcerated. A former soldier and warden, he was the last governor of the Robben Island prison and helped oversee its transformation to the museum it now is. Since then he has run a...

Apartheid is not legal anymore, Nelson Mandela was released from prison, and the ANC became the government. But Mandela remains on the US terrorist list.
