The debate on the status of Zanzibar in the Union has resurfaced again despite President Jakaya Kikwete's speech in Parliament that was expected to put the issue to rest.

For several months now, the country has been embroiled in acrimonious exchanges between top leaders over the status of Zanzibar. Voices have been raised and the matter was degenerating into a shouting match between two antagonistic sides that emerged in the ruling Chama cha Mapinduzi.

The April 26, 1964, announcement by Presidents Julius Nyerere of Tanganyika and Abeid Karume of Zanzibar, that they had formed a United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar (Tanzania) was a pleasant surprise for the people of the Mainland, Isles and the West. There was celebration, signalling approval of the Union.
