So, on Monday after getting up early and seeing the piercing at Kathu Shrine, and heading out of Kathu Village with the procession (see Vegetarian Festival Photos Part 1 ), I headed into Phuket Town to pick up the procession again in the old town. The narrow streets mean you get very close to the Ma Song, and very close to the firecrackers! I was taking photos on Thalang Road close to my favourite...

Hello from Koh Phi Phi We arrived in Phuket fine with just a slight delay to our flight. Spent three night in Phuket before heading over to Koh Phi Phi. Phuket was OK but very touristy and busy nightlife etc. Koh Phi Phi is very different its a lovely tiny island where there are no roads or cars just little lanes. Its beautiful here and we have really enjoyed our stay here. The first night we
So...this is my 3rd day on Phi Phi Don. I am SO GLAD I didn't stay in Phuket any longer than a couple of days because this is so much better. There are no cars on Phi Phi so it makes for a very calm and chilled out atmosphere. On Monday evening I went to the Pum Thai cooking schoolrestaurant and made 3 dishes for my dinner Penang Curry Thai Fish Cakes and Chicken with Cashew nuts. The ladies w

Swadeka hello in ThaiSo a ton as happened since my last blog. The Thai cooking class was fun we cooked some an interesting dish known as Thai Sticky balls which are pretty much rice flour balls boiled in water and then added to coconut water. It was very interesting and the texture was sorta like bubble gum I didn't like it very much but it was definitely an experience. Later that night so
Probably the most fascinating and also somewhat gruesome festivals in the world, the Phuket Vegetarian is best known for its aesthetic displays of unusual body piercings. You may see devotees with tire irons through their cheeks, or large spikes driven through their tongues. The festival is held for just over a week annually during the ninth lunar month of the Chinese calendar, falling somewhere in...
Every year on the first day of the ninth month of the Chinese lunar calendar - normally in late September or the beginning of October the bizarre vegetarian festival is started in Phuket, Trang, Krabi, Takua Pa, Satun and Ranong. It is believed that the vegetarian festival and its accompanying sacred rituals bestow good fortune upon those who religiously observe this rite. During this time, local residents...
Looks like a fun event, but just one photo . A devotee of the Chinese Shrine Bang Neow prepares himself prior to marching in a procession Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008, at the Vegetarian Festival in Phuket, Thailand. The festival celebrates vegetarianism and calls on devotees through self mortification to purify themselves as they take on the sins of the community. So how did he get that wine glass through...
Well this year I wanted to see something different during the festival. I admit to being a lazy boy sometimes, but today I was awake before dawn and headed to Kathu Shrine before 6am to watch the start of the procession to Phuket Town, and hopefully see some face piercing close up. Actually, the word "piercing" does not describe what happens. Something like "skewering" or "mutilation" might be better!...
AlreetI realise it has been practically years since I last wrote anything so apologies to those of you who wake up every morning praying I've written a new one. And don't lie I know that's all of you...There probably won't be anything new for a few of you who I've been speaking to regularly but I felt the need for a recap Koh Tao seems like aaaaages ago even though its only been about a month
