From a colleague at our Maclean’s Toronto headquarters: “[Another colleague] just called from her place in the flu line at Metro Hall. Eight over from her is Dalton McGuinty. Also waiting. “No press, no aides, just one guy who looks like security. “She thought someone ought to know.”

Dalton McGuinty, the premier for Ontario, says there is no need to hold public hearings on his plan to harmonize the provincial sales tax with the federal GST in July of 2010, because voters will be able vote on the subject in the 2011 provincial election. Does anyone else have any trouble with that math? The Liberals don’t care that Ontarians will have no say on the matter, because by the time...

There can be little doubt that almost everyone saw David Brown’s lawsuit coming a mile away. Any Canadian listening to the Caledonia man’s harrowing, shocking testimony before Ontario superior court judge Thomas Bielby this week, would have done the same in his shoes. Brown says he was threatened, harassed, vandalized, intimidated, and generally driven to the brink by the Mohawk "warriors"...

This week in Hamilton, Ont., a court is hearing a civil suit against the Ontario government and police. The testimony has shed light on just how cack-handed and cowardly the handling of the Caledonia siege has been by provincial officials. The $7-million lawsuit that is at the centre of the Hamilton trial was brought by Dave Brown and his family, whose home is bordered on two sides by the former Douglas...

I went for a physical a few weeks ago and was given a PSA test. Today I received a $30.00 bill for for it. Thirty dollars is no big deal, but in his 2007 election campaign Dalton McGuinty promised to cover the cost of Prostate Specific Antigen tests for men 50 years of age and older in the interest of early detection. However, in December 2008, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care announced in...

Cross-country tour A fossilized separatist in Quebec, a scrambling premier in Ontario, and RCMP-related shenanigans in British Columbia. The National Post 's John Ivison explains how and why Dalton McGuinty's Teflon coating may finally be wearing off, which is something we've been dying to see. It's just unfortunate we can't muster any enthusiasm whatsoever for Tim Hudak — and neither, polls...

Remember way back when... you know... you used to have a say in what the government did with your money ? -- TORONTO -- Premier Dalton McGuinty won't agree to hold public hearings on the HST across Ontario, but says he expects voters will pass judgment on the new tax in 2011. McGuinty says people can call talk radio or write letters to the editor about the 13 per cent single sales tax, adding he'd...

...vote for him... The effect of earlier confrontations with natives -- particularly at Ipperwash and Oka, was to terrify Ontario's government into a state of near paralysis. Premier Dalton McGuinty is a man heavily disposed towards confrontation avoidance. His solution to potential conflict is often to try and buy off the other party, with juicier employment contracts , for instance, or, as in this...

What a train wreck. Back in 2004 Ontario's Premier Dalton McGuinty opened up legislature with a speech regarding his government's promise to bring about, " Real, Positive Change ". He reported that, " Our government is committed to working together to build a stronger province with a higher quality of life for all ", and with regards to health he promised, " Healthier living...

Andrea Horwath, the bubbly new leader of the Ontario NDP, was asked recently what she considered Dalton McGuinty's biggest accomplishment. "He's been Teflon for the last five years and it's only recently that the Teflon has started wearing off," she said in an interview Tuesday. A new poll by Nanos Research suggests Ms. Horwath is on to something and that Ontario's voters may be starting...

Premier Dalton McGuinty says so-called Dalton Days are just a figment of the media's overactive imagination for now, yet he still isn't ruling them out to help tame the province's deficit.

We’re in favour of Ontario harmonizing its provincial sales tax with the federal goods and services tax. As hard as it may be to believe, we actually find ourselves on the same side of a tax issue as Premier Dalton McGuinty and his provincial Liberal government. To be sure, we have our reservations; we worry, for instance, the new tax will not be revenue-neutral for consumers. But by dramatically...

I'm sure there will be a lot of Liberals who'll be quick to point the finger at the federal Conservatives for the HST pain that is about to be inflicted on the people of Ontario, but remember this, the final decision to bring the tax grab to this province was that of Dalton McGuinty. The same Dalton McGuinty that vowed in the last provincial election that there would be no new tax increases. The same...
