The blog has been neglected last 48 hours as I have been up and down to London for various meetings. From what I can gather, the political picture down south is far far worse for Labour than up here . And up here is bad enough. This morning, I was killing time in a splendid Italian cafe in Camden which I last visited in 1983 wqhen I lived in north London. Deliberately sought it out as...

On Friday went to the 'thank you' party for all those who worked on the London elections for the Liberal Democrats. Nice to see Dee Doocey and Mike Tuffrey who are two of our ongoing LibDem members on the GLA and get all the gossip about who was doing what with whom - in the sense of chairing committees and so on. All change again apparently as Liberal Democrats, Labour and Greens combine to...

It wasn't the slickest meeting I have ever attended. I found some things very amusing, the most notable of which was seeing Ken Livingstone in the public gallery. Ahhhhh. He rather reminded me of David Brent in the Christmas special of The Office. Jenette Arnold was voted in as Chair of the Assembly with the Labour, the Lib Dems and the Greens voting on block. Unfortunately Jeanette's hope to...

A new YouGov poll for the Sun tomorrow has topline figures, with changes from their last poll, of CON 49%(+5), LAB 23%(-3), LDEM 17%(nc). This is the first poll conducted wholly after both the local election results and Boris Johnson's victory in London, though Populus's poll was partially conducted after the mayoral results. The 26 point [...]

In today's Guardian Jon Cruddas describes Ken Livingstone as "the greatest London Labour politician ever." I'm not about to revert to having a go at Ken, having spent the last six weeks canvassing for him, but Cruddas' description is just silly and betrays a profound ignorance of London Labour history. Given Ken's own knowledge of Labour history I think he would feel rather embarrassed...

Have had this up today on Comment is Free. Various commentators have fingered the blame for Boris’ win on outer London yet as Luke Akehurst points out here suburbs that bucked the trend by swinging to Labour include Brent and Harrow now represented by Navin Shan and further out in Slough in the Thames Valley. All true patriots are today celebrating the victory of the British National Party in getting elected onto the London Assembly. The result was almost exactly in line with my original expectations; I had predicted a 50% increase in votes and in the event the increase was 45% (90,365 to 130,714). I did, however, underestimate the increase in turnout, which went up over 20%, so in the end we got...

I woke up this morning hoping that Boris winning was just a bad dream - but sadly - it really happened. His acceptance speech though was very gracious - I would advise keeping that speechwriter standing just behind him at all times! Much as I have enjoyed Boris on TV shows I didn't want him as Mayor of London. Didn't want Ken either. However, the people have spoken and now the opportunity belongs...

To my disappointment, Boris Johnson has been elected Mayor of London. He got 42.48% of first preference votes (1,043,761 votes) to Ken Livingstone's 36.38%. The turnout was quite high and it seems that there was higher turnout in both traditionally Labour-voting areas in inner London and traditional Tory voting areas in the suburbs. When the second choice votes were redistributed, both...
