Yet another stealth tax facing millions of motorists each year, which also leads to excessive queues heading from Kent into Essex and vice-versa, is the road toll paid when travelling through the Dartford Tunnel or crossing the Dartford Bridge. A councillor in Havering has set up an e-petition calling for the abolition of the tolls at the Dartford Crossing. Apparently the tolls rake in £50m...

A health trust employee ran up a £1,000 calling a premium rate gay chat line from work. The bill was discovered by a telecoms consultant who was reviewing telecommunications at the Havering Primary Care Trust (PCT), which runs GP and dentist surgeries across the borough as well as St George's Hospital in Hornchurch. He estimated the employee had been calling the line for up to a year during...

There's another grassroots story too, though. The BNP aren't standing a candidate against Evans, but will have high hopes of attracting many Havering and Redbridge votes for their contenders on the London-wide "top-up" list from which 11 of the 25 assembly members will be drawn. Should they secure just 5% overall, a BNP backside will be planted in City Hall. In 2004 they got 8.1% of the top-up...

Back from an Easter visit to home in North Wales to find out that the BNP held the seat in the Havering Council by-election on Thursday in Gooshays. A disappointing result of course. Despite Labour coming 2nd and increasing its share of the vote at the expense of the Tories (and the turnout only being a miserly 22%). However, there is no way that this overwhelmingly white working class ward...

The Liberal Democrats gained Vassall ward in Lambeth borough council from Labour on Thursday night. The other two byelections saw the British National Party hold off a Labour challenge to keep Gooshays ward, Havering borough council, and the Conservatives easily retain Yapton ward, Arun district council.

Political Betting reports that the odious, authoritarian BNP held a council seat in the London Borough of Havering this week. Indeed it increased its majority in the Gooshays ward where the other two seats are held by the Tories (who came in a poor third on Thursday). Political Betting's coverage of local election results every Friday is outstanding (although quite why it refers to Conservative...

The British National Party, yesterday, not only held Gooshays Ward , in the London Borough of Havering, but substantially increased its percentage. This augers very well indeed for the London Mayoral and GLA elections in May. The result is: BNP 865 (38.0%) Lab 741 (32.5%) Con 489 (21.4%) UKIP 70 (3.1%) NLP 62 (2.7%) Lib-Dems 52 (2.3%) Turnout 22.6% Well done to the BNP’s Mark Logan and his...

The budget may have been a tiresome non-event, but some of the figures that came out of it really ought to change the tenor of political discourse. The reason for the endless Tory havering about tax-cuts is that the last two elections were partly won on the premise that 'Tory cuts' would leave a sort of gaping black hole in the public finances and were therefore irresponsible. Havering's only BNP councillor has resigned. At the 2006 council election, Gooshays Ward was highly marginal between Labour, the Tories and the BNP candidate. Yve Cornell, our candidate, was beaten by the narrowest possible margin, on the flip of a coin. A By-election on 20 March gives us an opportunity to win back a seat on the council and kick the BNP out of Havering. This is the start of the fight...

The neighbourhood police team in Harold Wood are one of the most popular and successful teams in North East London, so it is no surprise that Conservative Mayoral Candidate, Boris Johnson, wanted to meet them and learn about their work. Here he is pictured with PCSOs on bicycles which were purchased for them by local businesses. Boris heard how they had used their bikes to combat the 'mini moped' nuisance...
