Wonderful Wifi at Walthamstow Central Library

The ratio of moaning and complaining to praise on this blog is always far too much of the former and not enough of the latter , so I thought I'd just write a few words in praise of the web services offered at Walthamstow Central Library by the London Borough of Waltham Forest . The heart of the library is a listed building. It was where, in the 1970s, I first started getting addicted to reading...

Do it yourself

B&Q in Waltham Forest is like the branch that time forgot. I was up early-ish this morning, and with the weather so glorious, I thought I'd take advantage of London's lie-in (the roads don't seem to get busy until about midday at weekends) to go and get some paint I needed at B&Q. So off Jessica*, the Corsa and I toddled to Leyton. They have a splendid "Entrance" sign... with a bollard right...

On the Streets of Leyton

I was out in the pale winter sun this morning, delivering leaflets in the Leyton ward by-election in Waltham Forest, where local activist Winnie Smith is aiming to recapture the seat held until 2006 by Barry Smith (no relation). He was ousted by a scurrilous campaign by Labour’s Miranda Grell, who maliciously spread the false [...]

Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge

“Back in 1543, King Henry VIII was getting on a bit and had become more than a bit of an obese lardarse. This made climbing onto a horse, let alone hunting the royal deer, rather difficult. What was Henry to do but construct a great big three-storey platform in the middle of Waltham Forest from [...]
