ME and me (Free subscription) | 10 hours ago
One of the more irritating by-blows of an illness is a surfeit of acronyms. My ME or CFS is now thought to be caused by the XMRV retro-virus. I'm quite ill, and I can't work - but apparently I'm not ill enough that the UK Government considers me eligible for Employment Support Allowance. The only treatment I have been offered was a brush with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, not a treatment that is well...

Mike Blair, Scotland's back-up scrum-half, has been ruled out of Saturday's Test against Australia after failing a fitness test on an injured ankle. The Edinburgh number nine suffered the injury in last Saturday's 23-10 win over Fiji after coming on to replace co-captain Chris Cusiter. Blair will be replaced on the bench by Gloucester's Rory Lawson.

I've just come across a new blog by Alan Trench called Alan certainly seems well qualified to blog on this subject. Here is how he describes himself: I am an academic, associated with the University of Edinburgh and the Constitution Unit at University College London. There is bad blood after Peter Hain stood fast and vetoed Edinburgh as the seat of the permanent secretariat of the British and Irish council. Hain was representing the UK Government at the meeting. Why I wonder! Hain claimed there had to be a total consensus on the decision and simply refused to agree to it. In the first round of voting, Edinburgh received 5 votes, the Isle of Man 2 and Cardiff 1....

It is a small, but thoroughly worthwhile, step for a man. Giant leaps may take a little longer to arrange. I am talking, admittedly somewhat obliquely, of Alex Salmond's visit to Euro Finance week in Frankfurt . There he will meet the president of the European Central Bank, Jean-Claude Trichet, plus other eminent financiers and politicians. His visit, of course, comes in the aftermath of the tribulations...

British-Irish council representatives of Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Irish Republic, the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey all voted for the permanent secretariat of the council to be based in Edinburgh. Guess who vetoed the move? You're right, the Welsh Secretary Peter Hain ( pictured above ), who was representing the UK, at a meeting of the BIC on Friday in Jersey. Listen to this for an excuse...

Young centre Alex Grove will win his first Scotland cap this weekend to end half a century of family sporting frustration. And the Worcester centre will dedicate his big-stage debut to the soccer star grandad who was snubbed because he moved from his homeland. Grove will line up against Fiji in the November Test opener at Murrayfield and the proudest fan in the Edinburgh stadium will be Ron Wylie,...

Jonathan Glancey's article ( Bath keeps its world heritage status – just , G2, 11 November) appropriately looked at world heritage issues relating to central Bath, but did not draw attention to the real and current threats to Bath's landscape setting. A proposal to build a new park-and-ride, on meadows 200m from the world heritage site boundary, and visible from the Cotswold area of outstanding...

Chris Cusiter will lead Scotland in former England coach Andy Robinson's first Test in charge, against Fiji at Murrayfield on Saturday, with co-captain and scrum-half rival Mike Blair on the bench. Earlier this month Robinson took the unusual decision of not only naming co-captains but splitting the role between players in the same position. However a clearer idea of who really is Robinson's first-choice...

Next September, I plan to be in Armagh for an astronomy conference- not that I ever need much of an excuse to go to Northern Ireland. Now, these days we are encouraged to go green, and to use the train for short ( i.e. domestic travel) rather than flying. And it has to be said that the Channel Tunnel has improved rail links to the rest of Europe- apparently, by train, the nearest capital city to London...
