Well safely arrived in Bangkok on Friday morning after a rather hairy flight where a drunk passenger got a bit too 'merry', becoming very abusive and aggresive, and had to be handcuffed and arrested when we landed. All the more scary as we were flying to Bahrain at the time, but met some cool guys on the way who became...

I was first made aware of the result in a very early morning (UK time) e-mail written in Norwegian and English. Thanks ( Takk ) to the reader of the blog who sent that. There will be a lot of questions asked, no doubt, as well as soul searching and re-examination of national identity at this stage now that the result of the Tokelau referendum has been declared, particularly amongst the Fono...

I have been informed by a reader of the blog of this news story which advises that the result is in: Tokelau is to stay a New Zealand dependency. The story says: New Zealand's small central Pacific colony of Tokelau has rejected self-government. After a week long ballot on the three atolls a majority of voters supported self-government, but not enough to carry it. In results just announced,...

I've been speaking of a 'yes' vote, but having found out the actual text of the ballot papers below, perhaps I should start referring to it as an 'agree' vote. This is what a specimen ballot paper should look for the election (from the Tokelau Government website in New Zealand; page on how to vote ): The text is as follows: Fakailoga Aloakia [Official Mark] PEPA PALOTA MO TE FAIGA PALOTA A TE...

If voting is successful in garnering enough support for independence, Tokelau is to become the world's youngest country. According to the United Nations , the last non-self-governing nation to become independent through self-determination was East Timor, now officially known as Timor-Leste (from the Portuguese for East Timor), which became independent in 2002, and joined the UN the same year....
